I work as a freelance journalist in Istanbul. I have contributed to the New York Times and Deutsche Welle among other news outlets. I worked as a reporter for daily Radikal between 2010-2014, covering breaking news but also focusing on Istanbul’s urban transformation and received various awards for my reporting. I’m a graduate of Brown University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
I am into data: I’ve recently written a guide for journalists on how to make freedom of information requests and another one on online research tools. Since 2013, I’ve been part of a collective data compiling and mapping project on capital and power in Turkey – we call it the ‘Networks of Dispossession’. You can see a map of coal plants in Turkey and their owners here. I’ve done similar research for Reporters Without Borders and looked at media ownership structures in Turkey.
I’m a member of the International Federation of Journalists.
